actually, that helps as "surf" to me was conveying well, you know,
dick dale and stuff. I have not timed the song but the station I
listen to would probably not be fazed by 6 minutes. Thanks :)

Maybe I associate it with the west because the first time I heard it I
was coming down off the mesa into the valley, one of those
southwestern scenes where the primary features are the clouds and the
mountains. I agree, it's definitely not country.

I just listened to the 30 second sample on iTunes.

Surf is in the style of playing.  Surf is kind of like a pop punk sound
(Green Day / Blink 182 ), yet with a very clean guitar sound (Punk uses
distortion).  Country leans more towards the use of acoustic guitars,
whereas surf is more electric.

The lead guitar before vocals come in is very surf.  The twang in the song
is probably from a tremolo effect.  In country, the twang comes from a
pedal steel guitar, usually.

Based on iTunes samples of the album, I wouldn't classify the band as
surf, however I wouldn't argue with someone who called it surf either.  The
iTunes song is >6 minutes, I imagine there is a shortened radio play version?

Of course, I could be making this up as I go.
