the bacteria. Do this every few days.
Of course if the sponge is really bad, start with a new one.

Subject: keeping kitchen sponges fresh
ok, this will sound stupid... but who cares.
how the hell does one keep a kitchen sponge fresh... it seems they get
all moldy smelling very quickly.. then they are just nasty to use..
we are on well water here with a water softner... i don't recall
having this problem at my old house, which was on city water or
something...
