Supposedly, these three guys had paid body guards who were paid off before the kidnapping.  Plus, I'm not sure just how large a contingent of peers would be required todeter people with this kind of mindset.

    1.. Travel armed with the highest power weapons you're comfy with
    2.. Travel and stay with lots of friends EVERYWHERE (everyone watches each
  other take a piss, for crying out loud), at least some of which are also
  well armed
  At least to a small group of thugs you're a lot less attractive that way...
