Baseball economics heavily tilts the game in favor of heavy weights like
the Yankees and Red Sox but it does not guarantee it. The Mets have a
ridiculous pay roll and they didn't go anywhere. Neither did the Phillies
or Cubs. The Dodgers with 5th highest payroll struggled to make it in and
got ousted in the first round.
Look at teams like the As and Twins. They have been consistently winning
with a smaller payroll. It can be done except owners hire GMs that don't
want to do it another way. Almost all the GMs, regardless of which club,
are heavily invested into the system. Coming up with creative ways to tilt
the balance of power would undermine that system.
