i do it...but its moonlighting for me.

i dont think ill ever trust the market with my TOTAL paycheck.
but i got my start with small shops, built a few apps, and then joined
the local country club.  MORE CONTACTS than i could shake a stick
at.  not to mention i live in a one horse town where i am 33% of the developer
community, so when one mentions "Web/Internet" etc, my name usually
comes up.  all those things mike d. mentioned are GREAT ways to get
your name out in the DEV. community which may in turn lead to some
leads, however, it will be an exercise in futility if you are trying to actually
be known in the REAL world, where the REAL dollars are.
