I was under the impression that Iran hated Mr. Carter and realized that the hostages weren't scoring them any points so they had no reason to keep them except to spite Mr. Carter; which, for them, was a compelling reason. Therefore Iran released them on the day of Mr. Reagan's inauguration as way of insulting Mr. Carter.
