I think this is due to the personalities of the people who historically back both parties. Historically, the Democratic party has been a coalition of special interest groups: Farmers Laborers Gun Owners Environmentalists, et. al. They typically argue and fume until eventually they decide on a candidate, but none of them really likes the guy, they just think he's better than the other party's guy. Ralph Nader is a good example of this division: there's no farther right 3rd party candidate. Some people say that libertarians are but that usually means they don't understand what libertarians favor - they're usually closer to liberals than conservatives. Republicans, on the other hand, have traditionally been the party of business and their party usually rallies around a candidate they love, and so they all start speaking the same phrases - they're more ideological, more dogmatic, more military. "That's my leader and what he says goes." Republicans tend to follow the leader even when follows a path anti-thetical to their principles. The next thing you know you get oxymorons like "big government conservative." For the last 4 years Mr. Bush has been fiscally peeing on his supporters legs, but they'll tell you it's raining. In this election, the Democrats are hammering Mr. Bush on policy while the Mr. Kerry is getting hit on character.
