I would second, third, or whatever we're up to on Audacity for the software, plus I would recomend getting an external sound card to record with. The sound recordings from an internal sound card will have a lot of noise to them from all of the interference inside the pc case. This becomes especially pronounced when trying to record from a microphone since the signal has to be amplified quite a bit.
