I agree completely.

There's a feeling in this country (especially, dare I say, in the Blue
states) that Bush was an awful candidate and only a huge fumble could result
in him winning.

The fact is that Bush is a great candidate for an American election. His
messages are simple, clear and never change: people like that. He's
considered charming and down to earth: people like that. American campaigns
are not about an ability to do the job, they're about an ability to win an
election. Bush has that ability.

People liked Kerry as well: just not quite as much. I still think that
Kerry's only real "mistake" (and it wasn't really his, but rather his
supporters) - one that's still being made - is to underestimate this fact.

Too many people tried to rally the "young vote" that just didn't
materialize. Too many people called Bush supporters "idiots" and "fools".
The conservative base responded to this by hitting the polls in droves.

Smart people, a lot of them, voted for Bush. The Democrats (and more
importantly their supporters) need to finally recognize this.

Bah. That's only true if by "blew it" you just mean "didn't win".
Based on the 3% margin of difference, Kerry was a good candidate. The
country just happens to be more pro-war and more religious-right right
now. But it was a tight race by anyone's measure and as I read it, it
shows that Kerry was appealing enough to the undecided some of the
right to get so close.

The Dems really would have blown it, IMO, if they'd picked a more
solidly left candidate like Dean. It would have been a more
interesting race in many ways, but more polarized and probably more
futile. I still think that Kerry was the most viable choice, not my
personal preference over all, but certainly most viable.
