You and me both, I have an email notification for that.
It will search the calendar for all events, birthdays
and anniversaries. Then sends an email to the perspective
parties. 

Example:

Everyone gets birthday notices.
Husband & wife gets anniversary notices

A message board might be kind of cool. Something else I always wanted to
do with a family site: automated emailings for upcoming family
