During the war he owned a plantation he inherited in Virginia.  He
continued to have the plantation worked by the slaves.  They were not
freed until the Emancipation Proclamation which, by the way, only freed
slaves in Confederate controlled territory.  Therefore slaves in New
Orleans were not freed until the US abolished slavery later.
