I have most of Turtledove's alternative histories, missing a hardcover of
Guns of the South (anyone willing to sell?). I very much disliked the
outcome of his American Empire series - for obvious reasons. I have noticed
some sloppy errors in it,. MooseHead in Winnipeg in the 1920's - more than a
sloppy error, it took me 10 minutes to find a list of beers available in
Winnipeg during that time period. But overall a very enjoyable writer.

Have a look at his Videssos books. They're a thinly disguised history of
Byzantium. Much more enjoyable than the actual histories though.
