Good old Snopes:

<http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/shopping.asp>

  Black Friday is not actually the busiest shopping day of the year; it's a
myth. It may have been the case at one point, but last time I saw numbers
(I assume last year?) it was the 6th / 7th. Places get busier as the
holiday draws closer.

  (Although they do quote a source saying that it is "busy" in terms of
people, just not sales).

  When I used to work at the Danbury (CT) Fair Mall Black Friday was often
dead. How come? We assumed because every thought every one else was gonna
be there and no one showed up. To put that into perspective, the Danbury
Fair Mall was the biggest malls in New England (Might still be?).
