My sister-in-law called me the other day to ask if she should get a DS
for her son, who's 6. He has a GBA and loves it. I told her that the
DS was fun to play, but was probably marketed to an older crowd - the
Pictochat software seems to gear more towards the middle/high school age
at the minimum (although I know dozens of perfectly well-adjusted
grown-ups who got one, and love it). Although the DS plays all GB
sofrtware, I suggested that she get him a GBA:SP since he can only play
the GBA with that ridiculous light contraption, and he's got little
hands anyway. The SP might be more suited for his needs, since its
backlit, and to be honest, the GBA game cartridges, though small, are
still big compared to the teeny DS game cards.

To top it off, I played with a DS for a little bit the other day, and I
think the control is brilliant, but it's not as simply intuitive as the
GBA. The touch screen and dual screens will provide some pretty
interesting new dynamics for game interaction, but for a 1st grader, I
think the GBA:SP is probably good enough.
