You can check out the statistices for the Netherlands. Which doesn't have a huge surge in Marijuana smoking simply because you can. They also don't have any increase in violent crime that could be attributed to Marijuana smoking, additional health problems because of Marijuana smoking.
In fact, given the rhetoric from the US, Amsterdam should have devolved into a pit of sin, debauchery and general Anarchy by now given the lax view on recreational Marijuana use. Hasn't happened. Britain has also reduced it's restrictions on personal use of Marijuana, downgrading the offence to one that warrants a slap on the wrist if anything, rather than jail time. So, let's recap. 1) Naturally grown and smoked Marijuana is not as harmful as cigarettes 2) Marijuana is not as addictive as Nicotine. 3) Marijuana does not create the harmful high's of cocaine , heroin or other drugs. You can't overdose on Marijuana. 4) Countries have relaxed, or removed restrictions on personal, recreational use of Marijuana with no disastrous effects on their population. 5) Marijuana has not been shown to cause physical dependence as Nicotine, Cocaine, or Heroin. But cigarettes and alcohol are legal and Marijuana isn't. Why? Of course, I know chronic marijuana users that are seriously messed up. They have trouble stringing thoughts together and thinking deeply and coherently about anything. They start a conversation and by the end they can't remember what they were talking about at the beginning. I think this is a direct result of chronic Marijuana use over a period of years. By Chronic I mean every day, several times a day, for years. These people also had additional psychological and sociological issues I should also add. The Marijuana wasn't exactly recreation, it was more of an escape...they were using it as a drug to 'feel good' and get away from problems.
