My iPod gave up the ghost yesterday when the hard drive failed. I'm not sure if that's so uncommon. Luckily whenever my mother-in-law bought it, she purchased a 4 year warranty for $39.99. I took it into Best Buy today. They plugged it in to make sure mine was dead. Five minutes later I was walking out with a brand new iPod. I definitely think the warranty was worth it considering Apple will charge you $50 just to troubleshoot it. And, on a more promising note, the tech guy said that he saw a lot of the original g4 iPods come back wacked out, but he hasn't seen a lot of them since.
