Oh wow, a new arrival? Or just a long-time lurker? Anyways, pleased to meet you. Let me call up the Mistress of the Muffins :) Erika! Over here!
I thought I was talking to Larry Lyons when I answered you before. Was a little surprised he would take that position, actually :) Things are clearer now. I'm in New Mexico so I am not exactly commenting on this from upper Vermont. Insurance is outrageous here too. The usual reason given is the large number of uninsured drivers, coupled with high DWI rate and high mortality-from-DWI due to long distances to shock trauma. I am not really objective on this subject I guess. I insured my car for liability only because full coverage was going to be *really* outrageous, and the sucker got stolen. Bla. Taking the bus and shopping for an ugly car :P However, I guess I don't see why illegal aliens would be any more unlikely to buy insurance than legal aliens at the same pay scale. You seem to be assuming that they are criminals therefore they engage in all possible crime. I'd agree they are criminals; they have broken the law. But so has that guy who ran a red light this morning, and that doesn't make him more likely to mutilate small children, you know? I suspect that when we say illegal aliens we are talking about roughly a fifth of the people on my side of town. A lot of them own their own businesses and do fairly well. Perhaps (dare I incur the wrath of the NRA) it's the firearms laws that need to be tightened. If there are people shooting it out on a street corner, I am not going to be any safer if they are American. Ask anyone in Baltimore or D.C. :P Dana PS - Where are you in California?
