I know the kids these days are all about BitTorrent and P2P, but I'm and old
fashioned kind of guy and like my USEnet. I've got several services now
which are all due up this month... so I'm looking to maybe make a change (or
two).

1) Comcast gives a free (but bandwidth limited) accout to Giganews which I
like. Prices for "real" accounts are pretty low, but there's only one
available server.

2) I've usd Extra.newsguy.com for years and love it. Retention is insane,
they have the best web interface I've seen (immensely useful for grabbing
fills) and offer lots of nice extras. However the main (and only) server is
pretty slow for me making fetching binaries less than impressive.

3) SuperNews is great. It's cheap and allows you to automatically add
bandwidth to your account as you need it. So on the months when I don't
have time for downloading I only pay $5, but on the months when I do I
pay... well, more. ;^) They have good retention but only one server again.

4) newsfeeds.com has good retention and 13 available servers (many are
specialty servers carrying only certain classes of groups: "family",
"music", "multimedia", etc). Multiple servers in a tool that handles it
(like NewsPro) means I can have several dozen threads pumping data into my
poor little PC at once. However they seem to have dropped their yearly
accounts and have really poor account management (for example you can't jus
renew account - you have to create a new account then write to support to
ask for them to apply your old username to the new account).

I'm pleased enough with NewsGuy that I've already renewed them (it's what I
use for all my text groups). But I'd like to possible find something to
replace everything else. I'd prefer multiple servers (or, at least, a high
thread count for a single server) in about the same price range.

I really like Supernews in that the cost is related to my usage (I go on
binges when I have the time - but might spend months in crunch time not
downloading a thing).

I'm considering Giganews because I've been impressed with the free account
I've got (and there's a good chance that since Comcast is offering that
account that there is some direct connectivity between their networks).

Any suggestions?

Jim Davis
