I'd buy liar if she hadn't so conveniently died just afterwards.

I'd buy coincidence if it had sounded like that on the tapes. I mean,
I think the guy is a complete sleaze, but I am pretty sure that isn't
*why* I think he is guilty. I think that this particular lie coupled
with his particular behavior at the time of her disappearance, just
says the man felt trapped and did something he knew was wrong in order
to keep from having to deal with his life. At a candlelight vigil for
Laci's safe return, he was on the phone with his girlfriend planning
to move in with her. Sure sounds like he knew Laci was already dead,
doesn't it. He was lying to Laci and could not keep it up. Rather than
admit it, he killed her, then denied responsibility.

Hmm. Maybe existentialism *is* a good framework for discussing this.
Electra in The Flies says I killed them and damn it, I am glad that I
killed them. These flies of remorse that follow me around? They are my
flies and I am glad I have them. Scott utterly failed to be honest
with anyone in this story, including, I think, himself.
