It's for sure what she wanted to hear. She was definitely looking for a husband. And he for sure was a liar. Your theory though, does not explain why he kept calling her, up to a dozen times a day some days. Why *she* broke up with *him*. It seemed to me she did so because she had concluded he was responsible, and he accepted that. Tearfully.
