This mini-series is nothing like the books. Nothing at all.

The books (especially the first three) are very short, succinct stories (you
can really read one in just a few hours).

The magic in the books is secondary, really, to the story at hand, simply a
means to an end. The language is simplistic there are few scenes with more
than three people (most are with only two) present. There are no large
battles (there are a few, but even the battle with the dragon is fairly
rushed through as a means to an end, not as an "event").

Drama is simplistic but powerful with deep undercurrents and the physical
aspects of magic are a means to an end and not given in any significant
detail.

The first book, especially, is a simple tale with one clear message: power
requires wisdom. Everything in that book drives that point home - and even
this utterly simple point is completely lost in this sniveling attempt at
television.

Read at least the first book. The following books tend to be much more
cerebral and I can see why many people dislike them, but the first book is a
masterpiece on so many scales.
