In addition to client-side tools there are some nice web-based tools (well -
web launched activeX tools).

My favorites are www.PCPitStop.com (which can test for common system
configuration problems, viruses and spyware) and www.pandasoftware.com
Active Scan (which actually powers PCPitStop's virus tests, but the Panda
site offers more up-to-date signatures).

The great thing about these is you can run them on suspect PCs without any
software installation.  They don't find everything, but they do hit the most
common stuff (and a lot of the not-so-common).
