Let me start by saying I'm NOT an anti-microsoft person. However, I reached a stage were I was completely fed up with the reliability of my machine when running MS OS's. NT4 would just lock, normally when browsing, but not always. I even tried a clean install... didn't make a difference. Even the shop where I bought the machine couldn't fix the problem. It was incredibly frustrating when trying to develop web sites!!!
There was also the issue of proprietary email formats and the corruption of some mailboxes that really got me upset!! Not to mention the continual upgrading of hardware when new versions of Office or the OS were released. As I had the luxury of two machines here running NT4, I thought I'd dump it on my problematic machine, and go with Linux Mandrake 8.... I'm still using it now, and no longer have problems with this machine... it hasn't locked once. I use NT4 on my server, running CF, IIS and SQL Server. I use Linux on my desktop to code all the pages, browse, email, etc etc. I have VNC running so that I can be lazy and connect to my server without having to reconnect a monitor!! :^) I have even installed Mandrake onto my Apple Powerbook (which gave a HUGE perfermance increase over Mac OS 9.1). I find networking is so much better under Linux, and as we have Mac, Linux and NT boxes, it's something that no longer becomes an issue. Email seems to be better for me under Linux... the mailbox formats are pretty standard, and I can switch programs without any drama. And the installation, which everyone seems to moan about, has been improved 10-fold over the last time I looked at Linux a couple of years ago. I felt that the installation of Mandrake on my machines was easier than the last installation of Windows that I did. Just my 2c's worth!!! Please don't flame me for talking about Linux... I believe people should use whatever they are comfortable with, from a productivity point, Linux is a better option for me. And apart from anything else... I haven't paid for any software yet!! That's a big bonus when you are a small company!! Those ever-increasing MS costs were crippling us with the exchange rates etc. N On Sat, 03 Nov 2001 22:23:37 -0500 Patrick Harkins <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> scribbled: > ..
