iTunes is a cross between a music store and a jukebox like Winamp or MusicMatch
and an upload/download app.

You can add any MP3 songs you want into the jukebox portion, from whatever
source.(and thereafter move them to the iPod Shuffle.)

Buying them from the iTunes Music Store gets them in an Apple proprietary
format carrying a DRM payload, which works on the iPod, but not on any other
players.

Does anyone here know if you can load your own music onto the iPod shuffle or
do you have to buy every song from iTunes?

The Apple site is not clear on this.
