I've used my PocketPC for this purpose and it works well, but you do have to
be fairly close (for example lying the unit on the podium while speaking).

Of course at a CFUG or other venue like that you might just add a cheap boom
mic to the demo PC and do that (and you'll probably get better quality to
boot).  Voice recording (at voice quality) requires very little resources -
it should be possible to just do it in the background and still demo-away.

I've not used dedicated recorders or MP3 player/recorder combos (again, the
PocketPC does all that) but CompGeeks.com always a good selection of older
model players/recorders at good prices:

They've actually got a 256Meg MP3/WMA player/FM Tuner/Voice
Recorder/Flashlight for 80$... that's a lot of function for something the
size of a lighter.  ;^)
