In the town where I grew up in CT, they have a much more informal service.

Place any unwanted items out by the curb, and they will be gone within the hour.

This weekend we got rid of a kids bed (in the shape of a racecar), a Kawasaki
250 dirtbike, a couple of fish tanks, a sink, a set of bunk beds, 2 4x4 sheets
of tileboard and rocking chair.

Two other loads of stuff went to the dump (where we came back with a bicycle
and a roll of flexible copper tubing).

Up here in Boston, this is unheard of (except the week that colleges let out)

Agreed - we just gave away our old bed frame to someone on our local group.

It's a neat concept to say the least.
