A plane crashed Monday morning in the Rockaways, and buildings reportedly were on fire 
in the neighborhood.

The Airbus A300, American Airlines Flight 587, crashed shortly after 9 a.m. near John 
F. Kennedy Airport, and thick, black smoke
could be scene in televised reports.

The number of people aboard were not immediately known. American Airlines told The 
Associated Press it had no immediate comment.

The plane was heading from Kennedy Airport to Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.

The plane crashed was reported to be near Beach 129th Street and Newport Avenue.

Buildings were reported to be on fire. Thick black smoke was visible.

All local airports have been closed and all bridges and tunnels are shut down.

"I heard a rumble and my house shook, so I thought it was a fighter jet," said Susan 
Locke, who lives in the neighborhood. "I went
to the window and I saw a plane coming down. It just came straight down."
