Make sure it is a "binding not-to-exceed" estimate and go by weight, not
cubic feet...

I can't help you with any recommended companies, but I will provide some
general advice I've gleamed over time, if you decide not to exploit the
friend angle.

1) Phone quotes are worth less then the paper they are printed on. In other
words if they don't come out and review your moving requirements in person
and provide a written and signed estimate, do not do business with them, no
matter how much cheaper they quote you over they phone.

2) Do your absolute best to do business with a company that has been in
existence for a realistic period of time, at least a few years. Get
references, check with business bureaus, ect.

I have scene and read news stories about the horror stories of fly-by-night
companies who get all your stuff in their truck and then refuse to give it
back to you unless you pay significantly higher fees then original agreed
upon. They basically hold everything you own hostage, knowing you can do
little about it right then. Then once you pay, the company just disappears
before any legal recourse can be had.

3) Make sure you disclose any and all conditions involved in unloading at
your new home. This is a litigate cause for an increase in fees if the
movers find out at the last minute that they can not get their truck down
the street to your house; have to move everything up 7 flights of stairs
without an elevator; any condition that may make the unloading more
difficult.

Counting my childhood with my parents, I have moved at least a dozen times
in my life. These have included both self-moves and commercial they are
advantages and trade offs both ways. IE, you are unlikely to get much
insurance coverage if your friends drop your new plasma TV off the end of
the truck.

...Yeah, we're kind of split on our approach...
...
...I was kind of in favor of the friend approach, and Ryan was in favor of
...the movers approach. The difference being, he has exploited his friends
...much more than I, and his friends are the stronger ones...
...
...And while I'm not entirely sold on the movers thing yet, I see the value
...of it - we're moving in the middle of February. If there's a snow
...storm, it could completely suck to move, and friends can cancel, but
...movers can't :-) Well, I suppose they could, but...
...
...So we'll price out the movers and see where we end up. I mean,
..realistically, we're depleting our savings by thousands anyway - why not
...an extra grand on movers??
