I took a "poetry" class in college. It was very odd for a CS major to be in a high level English course. The teacher comes in, looks around, and says hi. And I'm thinking "cut with the pleasantries, where is my syllabus."
The teacher was very adamant that poetry and lyrics were very different things; and that poetry may not make a good song and lyrics would rarely pass as poetry. That said, I'm sure that studying one could help with the other. What you want to pick apart will widely depend on personal taste, I'm sure. Dare I recommend taking a look at some songwriter poetry books, such as Jewel or Jim Morrison?
