Between downloads and Comcast On Demand we watched the entire first season (after much promotion from friends) in about four days - the second season is only three or four eps in. I've really come to love the show - I adore exploration of Christian myths and would much rather be disturbed than shocked. Carnivale does that so very well. ;^) It reminds me mostly of some of my favorite comics: "Sandman" and "Hellblazer" specifically. If you get a chance and haven't read it "Sandman", especially, is easily available in cheap reprinted collections (it was really a seminal work). But I also get the same creepy-cool feelings from some of my favorite games: "Silent Hill 2" is probably the best of these (the game starts with the main character in a filthy bathroom considering why he drive through the night to a small town after receiving a letter from his wife... his dead wife). The other "Silent Hill" games are great for this, but so are the "Fatal Frame" games. It's not the same genre but the anime series "Neon Genesis: Evangelion" (also available from Netflix) has a lot of the same underlying religious themes. It's completely brilliant (but admittedly not for everybody). There haven't been many movies or TV shows that I've seen that have come close to this. Stuff by David Cronenberg and Tim Burton come closest for me. For sheer creepy-factor nothing beats "Dead Ringers" in my book. ;^) Anything else that thing I should look into? I figure fans of "Carnivale" would know some things I've missed.
