I am sympathetic to this man.  Granted he didn't handle it very well, 
but I think his intent was to follow best practices and do the best job 
he can.  Having worked with various people, I prefer to work with 
someone that is too by the book then less by the book.  The by the book 
people are generally more predictable and it takes little to assuage them.

The things I'm not sympathetic to though are a) jumping to conclusions 
about something he didn't know and b) the rude manner in which he tried 
to resolve a non issue.

Perhaps you can show him the error of his ways over some beers and 
cocktail shrimps. Of course he picks up the tab.
