Yesterday an email got stuck in the CF mail spool dir. It was a message from me, to me with the daily logfile extract of issues that needed investigating. It got partially unstuck at 3 AM: CF could send it but since it couldn't delete the message, I got many, many, many copies. After 68000 messages my mailbox was full, and the rest was redirected to the postmaster account, which had another 30000 or so messages by the time I killed CF and removed the file manually. After that I added another 100 MB to my quota to queue legitimate mail and started cleaning up. The problem was that Thunderbird, Outlook, webmail etc. all succumbed to the number of messages. Apparently threading 70000 messages in an inbox is a bit too much for them. After wasting a few hours I decided to just POP the server through telnet and simply delete every message that was 6111 bytes long.
There is a downside to large inboxes ...
