Great - I know very well that I can often come across as an ass and I didn't
want any bad feelings. ;^)

Well - it's definitely not unbiased (you won't find many unbiased sources on
this topic, unfortunately).

That site doesn't contain all the information, but it was the closest I
found in a brief search. It would be interesting to see their tax records
however...

You can get some of this information from someplace like
http://www.guidestar.org (registration required for detailed information).

Some reports from ratings organizations are below:

Mostly through legal fees paid for defense of extremists and payouts to the
families of extremists who were convicted.

I've not done any serious research in this direction personally. I'm a
member of the local Animal Rescue League here in Boston and I like them very
much (although they did inflict my demon of a cat upon us). ;^)

There are also several "no-kill" shelters around that seem well worth the
effort. I've not researched them thoroughly but the American Human
Association has always struck me as being very good
(http://www.americanhumane.org/) At the very least they are very definitely
pro-pet.

In general I prefer to give to local charities whenever possible simply
because they tend to be easy to investigate and talk with. PETA definitely
doesn't stand alone as a large organization that seems to have either lost
its roots or is misleading its supporters.
