> He called an actual employee live on the air.

That's what he does. Well did. Mostly other people do that for him
now. Captain Janks is particularly good at getting past screeners on
CNN. Bad taste, sure. but do we blame Howard? or the fact that CNN,
CBS, NBC, ABC and others are so desperate to have the "scoop" that'll
they'll out anybody on the air as long as they think they've got it
there first.

> And by the way he was a morning show guy at the time.

Still is, has been for 20+ years...and has great ratings. Something
that seems to elude his detractors. People are listening. and keep
listening.

> I did hear it and was appalled.

And you have the right to use your off button. or the dial, change the
station. One thing about Howard, he telegraphs where he's going with a
bit, you aren't going to be surprised by a sudden phone call he
makes...unless maybe it's to you...

Ya'know... there's something that puzzles me...

Howard Stern was not the first person to do tasteless bits on the
radio. He sure as hell won't be the last. I daresay he's probably the
longest running DJ that does the type of show that he does and I'd go
even further to say he's the best at it.

But where in the hell do people get off blaming this kind of crap on
Stern? Is there a causal relationship? If Stern didn't do it then
nobody else would? Is it that these others are trying to be like Stern
(high ratings is the name of the game, no?) and somehow _he_ must be
made the responsible party?

Puh-friggin'-leeze!

Janet Jackson had a "wardrobe malfunction" at the Super Bowl - Howard
Stern is to blame, the "coarsening of America" and all that rot.
Desperate Housewives runs a teaser at the beginning of Monday night
football ad suggesting that one of the ladies is going to get it on
with an NFL player - Howard Stern again? Some jackass (jillass?) in
NYC gets shit canned 'cause she made a racist comment and played and
overtly racist song on the radio - Howard's fault again.

WTF?

Turn off the radio, tune it to another station, listen to CDs, MP3s, whatever.

If "mainstream" America doesn't like what Howard says they'd turn
Howard off, but somehow he manages to pull great numbers (in prime
demographics) and sells tons of advertising.

Don't blame Howard for what some other DJ does. Or perhaps we should
blame Murrow for the state of news today or perhaps we should go right
the the source and dig up Marconi and put him on trial for inventing
the damned radio in the first place.

After all "post hoc ergo proctor hoc", right?

Or is that _just_ in Howard's case?
