We want this because, if we do not legislate morality, then I have to think for myself and make my own choices, and I just might choose something sinful just because it is available and I can not control myself. Or my children might make the wrong choice, because they can, and I can not control them to not too, but thankfully the government can.
I do not want to work that hard. We must do everything we can, as good God fearing Americans, to remove all possible temptations so I do not have to control myself and can live blissfully in my own world.
