Personally I use an IPAQ 2215, the main reason being it has both CF and
SD/MMC slots meaning I can stick a periferal (Wi/Fi, GPS, etc) into one slot
and still have the other free, this is handy if (like me) you use GPS as the
maps are far to big for internal memory so both slots are required, one for
GPS reciever, one for map data.

It is lacking when it comes to connectivity as it doesn't have built in
wi/fi but that can be got arround with a CF peripheral or simply using
bluetooth.

I have never found a need to use a bigger (or second) battery with it, but
then I do have a car kit for it and cradels both at home and at work so it
is never more than 30 seconds away from power anyway. I also have a great
little gadget that cost me about 2.50 to plug it into any usb port and
charg it from there.

Overall I am very happy with the iPaq. When I purchased mine the cheepest
place to get one was one of the traders on eBay but you may be able to find
them cheeper elswhere now.
