I served with the Canadian Armed Forces as a very junior officer. During my time I served briefly under General Dallaire. I have an incredible amount of respect for the man - he was one of the best officers I've ever worked with. After Rwanda, he retired from the forces and was found suffering from PTSD - he could not stop what happened and it preyed on him ever since. I'd much rather have an officer of his caliber rather than someone who thinks killing is fun.
His first concern was always his troops, and the civilians. At times I thought his motto was screw bureaucracy. He was a very innovative soldier in the best sense of the word. And he knew when to kick ass and when to negotiate and was brilliant at both. In Europe during a Reforger exercise he came up with a plan that let us really pull one over on the Marines in Norway. Later I served with him in Cyprus - in negotiating with the Greeks and the Turks he may have prevented another Cypriot conflict. that's the sort of soldier I'd rather serve with than someone who thinks that killing is "fun." larry On Fri, 4 Feb 2005 14:12:54 -0600, Gruss Gott <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > > Larry wrote: > > Being lised as being in Afghanistan and Iraq doesn't mean he fought. > > Personally I prefer officers like General Romeo Dallaire CAF) who > > tried to stop the Rwandan Genocide than ones who get off on killing. > > > > You may be making some large assumptions there - I don't know what > your background is, though. > > We don't know that any General "gets off" on killing, but certainly > it's part of all General's job - or could be.
