Did Keanu get it right - or even close?
Actually pretty close. Keanu can't really "act" in the traditional sense - but he can read words with some style and the words weren't really that bad. His timing is actually impeccable and some scenes really do evoke images of the "real" Constantine. There are a few unneeded internal monologues (especially the one at the end) but for the most part he hits the nail pretty squarely. The biggest problem is (for fans) is that without the British slang a lot of his attitude seems missing (or at least altered). Lines like "bollocks to you", "Got a fag?" or "bloody wanker" are non-existent and there's nothing to take their place. You just expect John to says these things and he doesn't. But the spirit of his attitude is definitely there and they (surprisingly and happily) maintain his distance throughout the story which could have easily descended a dozen times over into clich.
