They mostly didn't. In the worst areas, the middle class and wealthy people
all went away for the summers. It cracks me up, though, that Chevy Chase and
NW D.C. and Silver Spring were also considered "away" back then. Of course,
we didn't have cars and highrises to make heat and blacktop and sidewalks to
hold it. And we didn't pave over the ground so rain couldn't soak in and cut
down all of the trees.

My old apartment didn't have any amenities. Let me tell you, handwashing
dishes in an un-air-conditioned apartment in 100+ heat and 95% humidity.
Ugh!

Very grateful my condo has ac, even if I never use it....

After spending a winter up on Baffin Island, I gave up on considering
anything as cold.

But as far as this area is concerned, I am still amazed how anyone could
have lived here in the summer before there was air conditioning.
