Actually swimming is a bad example, if you watch most competitive swimmers
they breathe every third stroke (ie: on alternate sides) so they can see all
of their opponents, breathing on only one side would lead to half you
opponents being invisible.

Clearly this is a generalisation as if you are in an end lane you only
breath on one side, but still...
