Lost in Translation is kind of an angst movie in that's about smart
people who feel bored and oppressed by life's boring choices and so,
lost - thus the metaphor with Japan. It seems like an
angst/experience thing like Breakfast Club or 16 Candles.

I think it 's one of those movies that you either know exactly what
Ms. Coppola is talking about and love it, or you don't get it.

BTW - My wife and I stayed in the hotel that the movie was filmed in -
the Park Hyatt in Shinjuku, and it was one of the best stays I've ever
had. The hotel starts at the 40th floor and there's a swimming pool
in a 2 story atrium with floor to ceiling windows on the 50th floor.
The view has got to be one of the best in the world - you can even see
Mount Fuji.

Even if you think you won't like Japan, as we did, I'd fly the 14
hours just to stay in that hotel. We both came back loving Japan.
