Anyone with a SprintPCS phone and Vision/Picture Mail service has an email
address <subscriber>@sprintpcs.com. You can change your subscriber name, too.
Everyone with SMS has the additional <phonenumber>@messaging.sprintpcs.com. I
never used mine because of exactly what you suggest- too easy to become
dependent on it, and there is no way to transfer it.

Here's another option that you may have. My alma mater offer free email
addresses for life. The address doesn't actually have a box anywhere, it just
forwards to an address of my choosing, but it means I can keep that same
address forever. I generally give it out as my personal email address. Many
colleges and universtities are offering this same kind of service at the
undergrad and grad level. You can set the address to forward to your phone's
email address, and then you have email on your phone!
