You're comparing apples and oranges.
You've got two lines there at $50. With those two lines you've got your
standard features (call waiting, voice mail, call forwarding, etc) and
the extra phone numbers. Beyond that you have two basic lines that ring
in. That's perfect for your particular setup since (IIRC) it's just you
and Phil working out of the house.
We have five lines at $200. I didn't include the toll free number
because we don't go through Packet8 for them - we pay about $3.00/mo
for two toll free numbers (one for voice and one for fax).
In addition to the straight lines you also have to factor in the fact
that our phone system is a PBX - each line also has an extension number.
Along with extensions for each of the VoIP lines (which also have
direct dial numbers), our system gives us an unlimited number of virtual
extensions - they're available for transfer and have a voice mail or can
forward to another phone number. Having the extensions lets us have
features like transfer, call pickup and conferencing.
We also have two "auto-attendants", systems that answer the incoming
calls and direct them to extensions based on caller input (for so-and-so
press 2...).
I'm using the word "we" for a reason. I share office space with two
other businesses. I have two lines and one virtual extension so my
actual outgo is $80/mo for two lines with unlimited calls. The
accountant in the office has two lines and three virtual extensions.
The insurance business has one line and two virtual extensions. The joy
of sharing expenses. One of the auto-attendants answers the "primary"
and will transfer calls to extensions for each of the different
businesses. The second answers the line for just the insurance company
and directs calls based on a different rule set.
