I agree.  I don't think that "Lost" could really be "better".

HBO does offer at least some more freedom (language, adult content, imagery) 
but so far that doesn't seem to have hurt "Lost" at all.

The only thing that comes to mind as a real benefit would be that HBO shows 
tend to get another eight minutes or so per episode (compared to the network 
standard of 44 minutes, HBO series tend to run about 52 minutes per show).  ;^)

Still - I'm glad that "Lost" has succeeded.  The one thing that can't be denied 
about the networks is that they're very unwilling to allow a show - especially 
a relatively expensive show - surive meager ratings to gain an audience.

I think that Fox is probably the worst offender in this regard, but all the 
networks have been willing to throw great shows to the wolves for not being 
immediate hits.  Many shows are cancelled after only three or four airings.
