My neighbor's lawn caught fire today, and almost caught his house and truck
on fire. I got there just in time with one of our two brand new fire
extinguishers. I just followed the fire line across the perimeter in a
sweeping motion and arrested the entire line.

The problem came when, after only about ten seconds, the fire extinguisher
was spent. This was a brand new properly pressurized large extinguisher,
not one of those little convenience extinguishers, so I thought it would
last longer.

As soon as the ten seconds was up, the parts of the fire that had jumped the
fire permimeter started up a couple of new fires -- one of them near the
truck's gas tank -- but I had nothing left, and my neighbor's garden hose
was hopelessly tangled and wouldn't reach. We had to tackle the remaining
small fires (rapidly getting larger) by slapping them with coats, but if
they were any larger they would have gotten away from us.

If I had bothered to read the label (which I did after the fact), it clearly
states that there is only 13 to 15 seconds of discharge time in the
extinguisher.

So the lesson for all of us is this: When you're buying fire extinguishers
for your home or office (good A-B-C ones), get the *biggest damned fire
extinguisher you can find, and get more than one!* The big Kidde commercial
model runs about fifty bucks a piece at Lowes, but I learned today that you
need more fire extinguisher than you think. From now on we're keeping at
least three -- one of which is the big one, and when we replace the smaller
ones as they depressurize over time, we're replacing them with the big ones.

Respectfully,
