The creator of perhaps the best game of last year spoke at the GDC recently.
Here's an overview (anybody have a full transcript?):

Many of his sentiments mirror my own: the idea that games can (and should)
be fun; the myth that better graphics make better games; the idea that games
can evoke emotion and so forth.

He also made one point that I found thought provoking with all of the talk
about the possible negative impact of violent games: if (and I know it's a
big if) some games can have a negative impact on human emotions and actions
then wouldn't it stand to reason that other games might just have as
positive an influence?

Personally I think that the idea that games have a systemic impact is bunk
(no study has ever backed up this idea). However I also feel that there are
some people that must be influenced by games much more than others. I would
like to see studies with people like that (assuming they can be quantified)
playing both negative and positive games.
