Well, that's sort of pejorative from both angles.  For one, Apple's 
default 1-button hardware is fine for most things.  My 80-year-old 
grandmother has the "iLamp" iMac with OS X, and really is perfectly 
content with how she interfaces with the machine - I've never once heard 
her complain about context menus :).  For first-time users, non-techy 
types, kids, etc. the single button is OK.  On the other hand, I'm also 
running OS X, but am using an MS Intellimouse Explorer, and thinking of 
updating to one of those bazillion-button Logitech beasts, since it 
really would be nice with using some of the "Pro" apps on OS X.

And, on the Windows side, you can still wander into any computer store 
and buy a plain 2- or 3-button mouse that'll work with any Windows 
machine.  If you're completely insane, like yours truly, the 
Logitech/Kensington/MS ur-button-festooned bluetooth clicky-slabs will 
work as well.
