I earned my eagle scout badge and looked forward to rejoining scouting
when my son got to the right age, but it was just too much of a
religious organization anymore. Too many thumpers!

I don't feel that my son is going to suffer for lack of scouting, we
do other things, camping hiking etc.

My wife runs a Girl Scout troop (my 7 year old is a member), they have
nicknamed themselves "Girl Scouts Gone Bad." The girls run the
meetings (7-9 year olds), and each has a voice and a responsibility
for each meeting. It's great!

It is really a kick to watch the girls in the troop interact and
accomplish tasks...recently they set up and implemented the cookie
sales scheduling, including the contacts with the store managers for
site sales. Quite impressive to hear my daughter talking to the
grocery store manager on the phone, telling him how many girls to
expect and at what times.

Your girls can really benefit from a strong Girl Scout experience.
Just don't let them get caught up in that "girls can't..." cycle that
a lot of troops have.

And yes, _you_ can be an active parent in the GS experience too.
There's still a bit of the suspicious "what's a man doing here at the
meetings?" kind of attitude, but you can be a positive influence by
being involved.

And FWIW you should build pinewood derby cars with your girls...
they'll probably get a kick out of it!
