There's an even older story (from the 1840's) about another of my
greats - an uncle this time. Daniel Elijah (spelling?) was married to
a woman whom many considered a battleaxe supreme. Her name was
Elizabeth. One day after plowing the fields in May, he came in for
supper. His wife refused to give him anything until he chopped wood.

After the first few logs, he said the equivilant of screw this,
slammed the axe into the chopping block and took off. He spent the
next 12 years of working as a sailer, and travelling the world. One
day, he found himself on the shore near the old farm (this was in Nova
Scotia). He walked up to farm and there was the axe, still stuck in
the chopping block. Daniel, for whatever weird reason, decided to
finish chopping the wood. When he was done, he walked into the house,
sat down at the table and said to Elizabeth that he finished chopping
wood. She turned around walked to the oven and returned with the
plate, saying to him "Well here's your supper". It still had that 10
year old dinner on it.

And people wonder where I get my stubborness from.
