She would still say something like, "nobody treats my baby like that!"
if someone were to abuse me in some way. It's a term of
endearment/figure of speech not limited to the African American
community.

I honestly assumed you'd seen a picture of them, when you reported
that it was a black family. I don't expect you to jump to conclusions.
So, I'm just surprised that you would think that one phrase would be
enough information to determine someone's race.
